Perhaps you have seen these beautiful Ukrainian Eggs - Pysanky. They are made as part of the Easter celebration in Ukraine. Their detailed designs are made by a wax resist process. Each time the egg is dyed into a color, beeswax is used to cover up and preserve that color using s Kiska. The Kiska is a tool with a small funnel shaped end made of copper. It is heated in a candle flame and then touched to the beeswax. The beeswax melts fillinf the funnel. The tool has a tiny hole which allows the beeswax to come out and the artist uses it as a pen to "write" or draw the design on the egg. Once the color is covered up, the egg is dyed in a new color and the process is repeated. Beeswax is used to preserve the new color before it is dyed in yet another color. After all the colors have been added. the wax is removed to reveal all the colors the wax had been hiding.
