Yesterday was a beautiful day with temperatures in the 60's! Too nice for a gardener to stay indoors. I needed to be out and feel the warmth of the sun on my skin. But what can a gardener do outside when it is too early to plant? Gardening is much more than planting. It's about preparing for the season and caring for the established plants like bushes. Now is the perfect time for me to trim back the Burning Bush that has gotten way too big for it's spot. I don't have a hedge trimmer so I have to do it with my hand clippers. I couldn't see to do it in the Fall with all the leaves still on the bush. But now the bush is bare. I can see and now is the time to trim it up.
I'm told that now too is a good time to trim up the blueberry bush, to cut out the dead wood and lightly trim the old wood to encourage new growth this spring. Be careful not to trim too much - as berries come on the old growth but a little trimming will increase this year's yield. So that's today's task. Off to the field I go,
