There are so many traditions associated with the making and giving of Ukrainian Eggs - Pysanky. The designs themselves contain meaning. These meanings are tied to the Ukrainian agricultural lifestyle as well as to their Christian faith. One of the traditions is the emphasis on reconciliation of broken relationships and repentance. The eggs are decorated during the season of Lent. Lent is the 40 days before Easter during which one searches their soul, repents of the wrong they have done, and repair broken relationships.
From tradition comes a story which I believe gets to the essence of the meaning of this Lenten practice. It is a story about a monster who is mighty and full of great evil. He is chained to a mountain. During this time of year scouts are sent out to circle the earth to see how many Pysanky are being made. If there are a lot being made the chains of the monster are tightened and Love prevails. If only a few are being made, the chains are loosened, and Evil will have great power in the coming year.
Although it's a story, the truth remains. When people engage in the process of repentance and reconciliation Love abounds. When reconciliation is not sought after the evil festers and has its way in the lives of people. There is no greater gift than the grace and mercy we extend to others in our lives. Forgiveness and kindness go
a long way to making your life happier and the world a better place.
